Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi is a Ugandan novelist and short-story writer. She received a PhD from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. Her debut novel, “Kintu,” won the 2013 Kwani? Manuscript Project in Kenya and was nominated for the 2014 Etisalat Prize. Her short story “Let’s Tell This Story Properly” won the 2014 Commonwealth Short Story Prize and was published in her 2019 collection “Manchester Happened.” Makumbi received the Windham-Campbell Prize in 2018. Her novel “The First Woman” won the 2021 Jhalak Prize for a book by a writer of colour in the United Kingdom.
