Jeanne Birdsall

Jeanne Birdsall grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia in the 1950s and wanted to write children’s books from the age of ten. She did not begin her writing career until she was 42. Her debut novel, The Penderwicks, received the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and became a New York Times bestseller. It launched a five-volume children’s book series.
