Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1931, Jay Maisel began working as a freelance photographer in 1954. He studied graphic design and painting and received instruction from, among others, Josef Albers, Herbert Matter, and Alexey Brodovitch. He became known for expressive color photography. His work included five covers for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, the cover photographs for the first two issues of New York magazine, and the cover of Miles Davis’s album Kind of Blue. His photographs appeared in books and entered private, corporate, and museum collections. His honors included induction into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, being named Photographer of the Year by the American Society of Media Photographers, and receiving an Infinity Award.
