James Salter

James Salter (1925–2015) was an American writer. He was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in New York. He served for twelve years as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, leaving the service in 1957 when his debut novel, *The Hunters*, was published. He became particularly known for the novels *Light Years* and *A Sport and a Pastime*. Salter died in Sag Harbor in 2015 and is regarded as a modern classic of American literature.
