James Hanley (1897–1985) was a writer from Liverpool. He wrote 31 novels as well as numerous short stories and plays. Before his literary career, he spent nine years at sea, an experience that strongly influenced his writing. His novel “Boy” (1931) was accused of obscene libel. “Ocean” was published by Faber & Faber in London in 1941.
