James Gordon Farrell

James Gordon Farrell (1935–1979) was a British writer born in Liverpool. He is best known for his “Empire Trilogy,” which addressed the decline of the British Empire as well as colonialism and exploitation. In 1973, he received the Booker Prize and used his acceptance speech to renew his criticism of colonialism and of the prize’s sponsor, the Booker Group. Farrell drowned in 1979 after falling into the water while fishing.
