Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm (1785–1863) was a German linguist, literary scholar, jurist and librarian. After studying law in Marburg, he turned to the history of the German language and literature. He worked as a librarian and taught at the University of Göttingen from 1830; he later became a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Together with his brother Wilhelm, he published the collection “Children’s and Household Tales,” which they began compiling in 1806, mainly from oral traditions. The brothers also worked on the “German Dictionary.” Jacob Grimm is regarded as one of the founders of German studies.
