Iwan S Turgenjew

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818–1883) was a Russian writer and one of the major representatives of nineteenth-century Russian realism. Born in Orel (Oryol) into a noble family, he studied literature and philosophy in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Berlin. After a brief period in government service, he worked as a freelance writer. Turgenev wrote novels, short stories, plays, and poetry. He is particularly known for the collection *A Sportsman’s Sketches* and for novels including *Fathers and Sons*, *A House of Gentlefolk*, *Smoke*, and *Virgin Soil*. He died in Bougival near Paris.
