Ignatius of Loyola was born in 1491 at Loyola Castle near Azpeitia in the Basque Country. He was one of the principal co-founders and formative figures of the Society of Jesus, later known as the Jesuit order, which played a significant role in the Counter-Reformation. Ignatius died in Rome in 1556 and was canonized in 1622.
