Hwang Sok-yong

Hwang Sok-yong, born in 1943 in Manchukuo (now China), is a South Korean writer. As a young man, he worked on construction sites and in factories. His notable novels include The Distant Garden (1999), The Lotus Flower (2003), and Princess Bari (2007). His work addresses political oppression, social exploitation, and international migration, and also draws on motifs from Korea’s premodern storytelling tradition. Hwang Sok-yong has received numerous national and international literary awards.
