Horst Bienek

Horst Bienek (1930–1990) was a German writer, artist and filmmaker. Born in Gleiwitz, now Gliwice, he worked for Hessischer Rundfunk and as an editor at the German publisher dtv before becoming a freelance writer. In 1951, he was arrested and sentenced to forced labor in the Soviet Union; he was granted amnesty in 1955. Until his death, he headed the literature department of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. His honors included the Wilhelm Raabe Prize and the Jean Paul Prize.
