Born in Vienna, Hermann Urbanek was already a member of the Perry Rhodan Magazine staff in 1980. He wrote several hundred biographies of science-fiction and fantasy authors, including almost all Perry Rhodan authors. From 1986 onward, his contributions appeared in the Heyne compendium SF-Jahr and in numerous magazines. He received the German Fantasy Award in 1980 and the Kurd Laßwitz Special Award in 1997. In 2005, he was also awarded the German Fantasy Award for co-editing the Lexikon der Fantasy-Literatur.
