Alex Raymond (1909–1956) was an American comic-strip artist. Until the 1929 stock-market crash, he worked as a private secretary to a Wall Street stockbroker before turning to drawing. Until 1934, he worked as a ghost artist on popular newspaper strips. He became known for the series “Flash Gordon,” “Jungle Jim,” and “Secret Agent X-9,” which appeared through King Features Syndicate from 1934. Raymond joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944. After World War II, he created “Rip Kirby,” which he worked on until his death. He is regarded as one of the influential artists of early comic-strip history.
