Herman Koch was born in Arnhem in 1953. The writer achieved his international breakthrough with the novel Angerichtet (2010), which was translated into 37 languages and reached bestseller lists in several countries, including the Spiegel bestseller list and the New York Times Top Ten. The novel was adapted for film as The Dinner, starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney. His other works include the novella Einfach leben.
