Henri Alain-Fournier, whose real name was Henri-Alban Fournier, was born in 1886 in La Chapelle-d’Angillon near Bourges. The French writer worked as a journalist in Paris and also published poems and short stories. He is best known for his only completed novel, *Le Grand Meaulnes* (*The Wanderer*), published in 1913 and strongly autobiographical in character. Alain-Fournier was killed in the First World War in 1914.
