Helon Habila

Helon Habila was born in Nigeria in 1967. He studied literature and worked as a journalist in Lagos, including for Hints magazine and the newspaper Vanguard. In 2001, he received the Caine Prize for African Writing for his short story “Love Poems.” His novel Oil on Water won the German Crime Fiction Prize and was shortlisted for the PEN/Open Book Award and the Orion Book Award. Habila has also taught creative writing at George Mason University. In 2013, he took part in the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program as a DAAD fellow.
