Heinrich Gerlach

Heinrich Gerlach (1908–1991) was a German writer and teacher. During the Second World War, he served as an officer and took part in the Battle of Stalingrad. After being captured, he became a member of the League of German Officers and the National Committee for a Free Germany. He returned to Germany in 1950 and worked as a teacher in northern Germany. He is best known for the novel *Die verratene Armee* (1957) and *Odyssee in Rot* (1966), his memoir of captivity.
