Heiner Bielefeldt (born 1958) is a philosopher, theologian and historian. He taught human rights and human rights policy at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and directed the German Institute for Human Rights in Berlin from 2003 to 2009. From 2010 to 2016, he served as Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council on freedom of religion or belief. Bielefeldt is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and has published widely, including on human rights in immigration societies.
