Hans Wagener, born in 1940, studied German and history in Münster and Freiburg and received his doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in 1967. He taught German literary studies there, with a focus on the Baroque period and the 20th century, and was a professor of German studies and German literature. He published books, essays, and edited volumes on German literature, including works on Andreas Gryphius, Frank Wedekind, Erich Kästner, Erich Maria Remarque, Siegfried Lenz, and Sarah Kirsch, as well as on exile, war, and anti-war literature.
