Hans-Joachim Gehrke is a historian specializing in ancient history. After completing his doctorate and habilitation, he taught as a professor at the universities of Würzburg, Berlin, and Freiburg. From 2008 to 2011, he was president of the German Archaeological Institute. Previously, from 1999 to 2005, he served on the Senate, Board of Trustees, and Main Committee of the German Research Foundation. Gehrke is a member of the Academia Europaea and the Leopoldina. In 2010, he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany. His publications include several survey works on ancient history; he also edited the volume “The World before 600: Early Civilizations” (2017).
