Giorgio Scerbanenco was born in Kyiv in 1911 to a Ukrainian officer and an Italian mother. After the outbreak of the Russian Revolution, he fled to Italy with his mother; his father was killed during the upheaval. He initially worked as a reporter before turning to writing. Scerbanenco wrote around 60 novels as well as numerous short stories. In 1969, shortly before his death, he received the Grand Prix du Roman Policier.
