Gianfranco Calligarich (died 2024) was born in Asmara, Eritrea, and came from a family from Trieste. He grew up in Milan and later moved to Rome, where he worked as a journalist and screenwriter. In 1994, he founded the Teatro XX Secolo. His novel The Last Summer in the City was first published in Italian in 1973 and translated into twenty languages. Its German edition was published by Zsolnay in 2022, followed by Like a Wild God in 2024.
