Gerhard Ertl

Gerhard Ertl was a German physicist and chemist who made major contributions to modern surface chemistry and catalysis. From 1986 to 2004, he directed the Department of Physical Chemistry at the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin. In 2007, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his studies of chemical processes on solid surfaces, including the mechanisms of the Haber–Bosch process.
