Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831) was a German philosopher and one of the leading figures of German Idealism. He studied philosophy and Protestant theology in Tübingen alongside Friedrich Hölderlin and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling. After working as a private tutor and serving as rector of the Ägidiengymnasium in Nuremberg, he taught as a professor in Jena, Heidelberg and, from 1818, Berlin. His major works include the Phenomenology of Spirit (1807). Hegel’s systematic philosophy had a lasting influence on the development of modern philosophy.
