Gabriele Riedle was born in Stuttgart in 1958. She worked as a culture editor at the newspapers taz and Die Woche and was an editor and reporter at GEO from 2001 to 2016. She became known for her widely awarded reportage from crisis and conflict regions on several continents. In 2017, she received the Bavarian Television Award and the Juliane Barthel Media Award for the documentary “Die heimliche Revolution. Frauen in Saudi-Arabien.” In 2018, she was a visiting professor at the University of Virginia, where she taught the history of war reporting. In addition to reportage, she published the novel “Fluss” (1998), co-written with Viktor Yerofeyev, as well as “Versuch über das wüste Leben” (2004) and “Überflüssige Menschen” (2012).
