Fritz Stern

Fritz Stern (1926–2016) was a German-American historian. In 1938, he emigrated from Germany to the United States with his parents. He taught history at Columbia University, where he was later professor emeritus. His major works include „The Politics of Cultural Pessimism“ („Kulturpessimismus als politische Gefahr“), „Gold and Iron: Bismarck, Bleichröder, and the Building of the German Empire“, „The Politics of Cultural Despair“ („Das feine Schweigen“), „Verspielte Größe“, and the memoir „Five Germanys I Have Known“ („Fünf Deutschland und ein Leben“). Stern received numerous honors, including the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1999 and the German National Prize in 2005.
