Frances Hardinge was born and raised in Kent. She studied English at the University of Oxford. Her writing career began after she won a short-story competition run by a literary magazine. Her first novel, *Fly by Night*, was published in 2005. She received the British Costa Book Award in 2015 for *The Lie Tree*, which was translated into more than 30 languages. *A Skinful of Shadows* was nominated for the 2019 Carnegie Medal.
