Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821–1881) was a Russian writer. He was born in Moscow as the second of eight children in an impoverished noble family. He was sentenced to four years of forced labor for revolutionary activities. His life was also marked by a passion for gambling and the resulting financial difficulties. From 1846 onward, he wrote nine novels as well as numerous short stories, novellas, and essays.
