Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) was a Portuguese poet and writer. He spent much of his youth in Durban, South Africa, returning to Lisbon in 1905, where he worked as a commercial correspondent. Alongside poetry, prose, and essays, he wrote under several heteronyms, including Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos. His best-known works include The Book of Disquiet and Mensagem. Much of his literary work was published only after his death.
