Ferdinand Leopold

Ferdinand Leopold, born in Bucharest in 1960, is a German translator of literary and philosophical texts. He studied Indology, philosophy, and Tibetan studies and began working as a freelance translator in 1988. His translations include works by E. M. Cioran, Mircea Eliade, Ioan P. Culianu, and Mircea Cărtărescu. For Suhrkamp Verlag, he translated in particular Cioran’s early Romanian works. Leopold received, among other honors, the International Literature Prize and the Zug Translation Fellowship in 2013.
