E. M. Cioran (1911–1995) was a Romanian philosopher and writer. He was born in Rășinari near Hermannstadt in Transylvania, the son of a Greek Orthodox priest. From 1928 to 1931, he studied philosophy at the University of Bucharest. By 1939, he had published five books in Romanian. In 1937, he went to Paris on a scholarship and worked there as a freelance writer. Cioran died in Paris in 1995.
