Erri De Luca, born in Naples in 1950, is an Italian writer. He moved to Rome at the age of 19 and worked, among other jobs, as a bricklayer, truck driver, and warehouse worker. He taught himself several languages, including Biblical Hebrew, in order to translate the Bible. He began writing only at the age of 40 and went on to publish more than 30 novels, essays, and translations. He received the Petrarch Prize in 2010 and the Prix Européen de Littérature in 2013.
