Erich Maria Remarque

Erich Maria Remarque (1898–1970) was a German writer, journalist, and former teacher. Born in Osnabrück, he worked as a substitute teacher after the First World War and later as an editor in Hanover and Berlin. He became internationally known for the pacifist novel All Quiet on the Western Front (1928), which depicts the brutality of war. His other notable works include The Road Back. His books were banned and publicly burned in Nazi Germany in 1933, and he was stripped of his German citizenship in 1938. Remarque died in Ticino in 1970.
