Erich Fromm (1900–1980) was a German-American psychoanalyst, philosopher, and social psychologist. Born in Frankfurt am Main, he studied psychology, philosophy, and sociology before training as a psychoanalyst. From 1930, he was associated with the Institute for Social Research, which later became linked with the Frankfurt School. He emigrated to the United States in the early 1930s, where he taught at various institutes, and later taught in Mexico. His best-known works include *Escape from Freedom*, *The Art of Loving*, and *To Have or To Be?* Fromm died near Locarno, Switzerland, in 1980.
