Edith Bruck was born in Hungary in 1931. In 1944, she was deported to Auschwitz and liberated at Bergen-Belsen. After the Second World War, she initially emigrated to Israel. She worked as a writer, journalist, screenwriter, and translator. Her wide-ranging literary work received numerous awards, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2021. Her work The Barefoot Girl was nominated for the Premio Strega in 2021.
