Dschelaladdin Rumi (1207–1273), also known as Maulana (“our master”), was a Persian poet and mystic. He was born in Balkh, on the northern edge of the Afghan Central Massif, and spent most of his life in Konya, Anatolia. After studying literature, he was introduced to the teachings of mysticism.
