Annemarie Schimmel (1922–2003) was a German scholar of Islam and a professor of Islamic languages, religious history, and Indo-Muslim culture. She taught, among other places, at Harvard, Bonn, Ankara, Cambridge, Massachusetts, London, and Edinburgh, and wrote more than 100 books. Her publications include “Sufism: An Introduction to Islamic Mysticism,” “Morning Land and Evening Land: My West-Eastern Life,” and “A Book Called Joy.” She received numerous awards for her scholarly and cultural work, including the Friedrich Rückert Prize in 1965 and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1995. She described Pakistan as her second home.
