Douglas Hofstadter

Douglas Hofstadter was born in New York in 1945 and spent his youth in California; from 1958 to 1959, he lived in Geneva. He studied mathematics at Stanford University until 1965 and subsequently at the University of Oregon in Eugene, where he received a doctorate in physics in 1975. In 1974 and 1975, he worked as a research assistant in the University of Regensburg’s physics department. There, he discovered the phenomenon known as the “Hofstadter butterfly,” which became well known in physics.
