Dirk Kurbjuweit was born in Wiesbaden in 1962. From 1990 to 1999, he was an editor at the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, after which he worked at Der Spiegel as a reporter, head of its Berlin bureau and deputy editor-in-chief, among other roles. As a writer, he published novels including The Solitude of Crocodiles (1995), Two Without (2001), Fear (2013) and Haarmann (2020), as well as nonfiction, screenplays and a play. Several of his works were adapted for film or the stage. He received the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize for reportage in 1998 and 2002, followed by awards including the Media Prize of the German Bundestag (2009), the Roman Herzog Media Prize (2011) and the German Reporter Award (2012).
