Dipesh Chakrabarty, born in 1948 in Kolkata, is a historian who served as the Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor of History at the University of Chicago. He was a founding member of the Subaltern Studies collective. His book “Provincializing Europe: Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference” significantly influenced historical scholarship, particularly the field of global history. Chakrabarty was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Australian Academy of the Humanities. His honors include the Toynbee Prize (2014) and the Tagore Memorial Prize (2019).
