Dimitri Verhulst was born in 1972 in Aalst, Belgium, and became known as a Flemish writer working in Dutch. He grew up with foster parents and in children’s homes and, before pursuing a literary career, worked as an entertainer, for a pizza delivery service, in a plastics factory and as a tour guide. His autobiographically inspired novel *The Misfortunates* became a bestseller, was nominated for the AKO Literature Prize and received the Golden Owl Audience Award. He received the Libris Literature Prize for *Goddamn Days on a Goddamn Planet*. His works have been translated into more than twenty languages.
