Dieter Birnbacher

Dieter Birnbacher (born 1946) is a German philosopher. He studied philosophy, English and general linguistics in Düsseldorf, Cambridge and Hamburg, and taught at, among others, the universities of Dortmund and Düsseldorf, where he became professor emeritus of philosophy. His research focuses on ethics—particularly environmental, medical and bioethics—anthropology and the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. His major publications include “Die Logik der Kriterien” (1974), “Verantwortung für zukünftige Generationen” (1988), “Tun und Unterlassen” (1995), “Analytische Einführung in die Ethik” (2003), “Natürlichkeit” (2006), “Schopenhauer” (2009) and “Klimaethik” (2016). In 2004, he was elected to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
