David Steindl-Rast

David Steindl-Rast (born 1926 in Vienna) studied art, anthropology, and psychology and earned a doctorate in psychology. In 1953, he joined the Benedictine monastery of Mount Saviour in New York State, USA. As a Benedictine monk, writer, and spiritual teacher, he became involved in interfaith dialogue from the 1960s onward and sought to connect Christian spirituality with Zen Buddhism and other Eastern wisdom traditions. His German-language works include “Fülle und Nichts,” “Die Achtsamkeit des Herzens,” and “Wendezeit im Christentum,” co-authored with Fritjof Capra. He initiated the Gratefulness network. In 2022, he received the Theological Prize of the Salzburg University Weeks.
