David Engels

David Engels (born 1979) is a Belgian ancient historian. He studied history, philosophy and economics at RWTH Aachen University and held the chair of Roman history at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) from 2008 onward. He later worked at the Instytut Zachodni in Poznań. His research has focused on Roman religious history, the late Roman Republic, ancient philosophy and theories of the state, as well as the philosophy of history. He became known to a wider audience through “Auf dem Weg ins Imperium,” in which he compared the crisis of the European Union with the decline of the Roman Republic in the first century BC. His other works include “Renovatio Europae” and “Was tun”.
