David Engels

David Engels (born 1979 in Belgium) is a Belgian ancient historian. He studied history, philosophy and economics at RWTH Aachen University and received his doctorate in 2007. From 2008 to 2023, he held the chair of Roman History at the Université libre de Bruxelles. From 2018 to 2024, he was a research professor at the Instytut Zachodni in Poznań. His research interests include Roman religious and political history, as well as ancient and modern philosophies of history. He became widely known through his book “Auf dem Weg ins Imperium” (2014), in which he compared the crisis of the European Union with the decline of the Roman Republic. From 2017, he also served as president of the Oswald Spengler Society.
