Daniel Mendelsohn, born in New York in 1960, is an American author, translator, and literary critic. He received a doctorate in Classical Studies in 1994. His criticism appeared in publications including The New York Review of Books, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. He also gained recognition for his award-winning family memoir »Die Verlorenen. Eine Suche nach sechs von sechs Millionen« (2006), about the search for six relatives among the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust. His books published in German include »Eine Odyssee. Mein Vater, ein Epos und ich« (2019) and »Flüchtige Umarmung. Von der Sehnsucht und der Suche nach Identität« (2021). In 2022, he received the Malaparte Prize.
