Claus Leitzmann

Claus Leitzmann (born 1933) is a biochemist, microbiologist and nutrition scientist. After studying in the United States and holding academic positions in Los Angeles, Bangkok and elsewhere, he joined the Institute of Nutrition at Justus Liebig University Giessen in 1974. He was appointed professor of nutrition in developing countries there in the late 1970s and directed the institute from 1990 to 1995. He became professor emeritus in 1998. Leitzmann has published numerous academic and popular-science books and articles. In 2013, he was included in the International Union of Nutritional Sciences’ list of “Living Legends.” In 2010, he co-founded an institute for alternative and sustainable nutrition in Giessen with Markus Keller.
