Claude Anet, whose real name was Jean Schopfer, was born in 1868 in Morges, Switzerland, and died in Paris in 1931. The French writer and journalist published novels, travel writing, and plays. His best-known works include “Ariane, jeune fille russe” (1920) and “Mayerling,” both of which were adapted for the cinema several times. Anet worked as a reporter and, as a correspondent in St. Petersburg, witnessed the Russian Revolution in 1917. He was also a successful tennis player: he became French champion in 1892 and was a finalist again in 1893.
