Clarice Lispector (1920–1977) was a Brazilian writer. Born in Ukraine to Jewish parents, she came to Brazil with her family and grew up in the country’s impoverished Northeast. She studied law and worked as a teacher and journalist before becoming a writer. Lispector wrote novels, short stories, children’s books and literary columns. Her acclaimed first novel, Near to the Wild Heart, was published in 1944 and broke with the conventions of traditional writing. She received numerous awards for her work.
