Christoph Martin Wieland

Christoph Martin Wieland (1733–1813) was a German poet, writer, and translator. He was born on 5 September 1733 in Oberholzheim near Biberach an der Riss and died on 20 January 1813 in Weimar. After his education, he worked as a private tutor in Switzerland from 1752 and later taught at the University of Erfurt. Wieland wrote novels, satires, plays, essays, and verse narratives, and translated works by Shakespeare into German. As editor of the journal Der Teutsche Merkur, he helped shape the literary and intellectual life of his time. Alongside Herder, Goethe, and Schiller, he is considered one of the four major figures of Weimar Classicism.
