Christian Boltanski (1944–2021) was a French artist best known for his installations. His work explored themes of time, transience, and death. From 1967 onward, he created photographic works, followed by autobiographical pieces as well as archival and inventory-based projects concerning his own life and those of fictional people. He worked with media including photography and sound. Boltanski participated in numerous international exhibitions, including documenta 5, 6, and 8 and the 2011 Venice Biennale. He received the Kaiserring of the City of Goslar in 2001 and the Praemium Imperiale for Sculpture in 2006.
